I thought that the first trimester of this class was actually not that bad. Coming into this class, I wasn't really sure what to expect, and I definitely was not expecting to actually sort of LIKE some of the things that we are learning. But the truth is, I do. I may not enjoy doing homework assignments at home, but I do enjoy some of the things we are learning. And it is also nice to know that I am actually learning something. There have been so many other classes that I have taken where I just don't feel like I'm learning anything, and it's nice to know that my brain can be pushed to think incredible things sometimes.
But, now we are back to my least favorite type of problem EVER that ever existed in the wonderful subject of math: story problems. I thought that I would be done with the "You go to the store to buy 50 watermelons" by fifth grade but I was obviously wrong. Another annoying thing about math problems is the fact that the assignments seem much shorter, but really, the problems just take much much longer to figure out. And I really hate spending a ton of time on one problem, especially when I know that I will never have to calculate how minimize the cost of the different kinds of 50 apples that I buy. However, I do find it cool that we can use derivatives to solve mostly anything. I mean, who would know that you could use the derivative of an equation to find out how to minimize the cost of the different kinds of apples that I buy!??!?! As I have stated before, I actually really enjoy derivatives, so I guess they sort of make the story problems a tiny bit easier to deal with. I also enjoy the fact that everything in calculus connects to another thing. It is nice to learn something like derivatives, and then instead of never using it again, applying it to whatever we do next. I feel like this is what gives the class so much more impact, and again, it makes me feel like what I am doing now is important now, but it will also be important later.
